What is design?

Design, be it fashion , lifestyle, products of necessity technology, beauty or any other accessories is rapidly going through a phase of change and innovation due to the increasing consumer demand of preferred utility and comfort. Opportunities in design profession galore for students as there are hundreds of sector which need highly skilled and innovative professionals. Fashion, engineering, manufacturing, automobiles, entertainment, advertising, interior designing, food, IT, architecture are some of the sectors where designers are in great demand. The career in design holds immense scope and potential for skilled and talented individuals with innovative ideas.

Design as a career

Design is a career which offers great challenges and at the same time immense scope for your creativity and innovative ideas. It provides you with the satisfaction of seeing your ideas into shape and form and obviously getting recognition.

Who are designers?

Designers whether fashion, industrial or product, conceptualize and evaluate ideas, making them tangible through products in a more systematic approach. Designers possess skills needed to bring a product from its conception to the market.

Career prospects

There are various career options for designers. They can be employed by manufacturing establishments, large corporations or design firms. Even the government of India recruits a large number of designers. Designers can also freelance or start their own venture.
Some of the fields to which designers can make their profession are:

FASHION DESIGN

Is a highly competitive, but rewarding field for the creative individuals. To pursue a career as designer, freelance design consultants, design managers, stylists, exhibition and visual display experts, forecasting and fashion trends forum organizers, costume designers, illustrators, pattern engineers and entrepreneurs.

LEATHER DESIGN

To pursue a wide range of careers in the leather industry in the areas of design, product development, merchandising, manufacturing, retail and other areas. The program also develops entrepreneurial skills enabling students to set up business geared for export/domestic markets.

LIFESTYLE ACCESSORY DESIGN

Relates to people’s living patterns, and the products they interact with on a day to day basis. To pursue a career as designers, brand managers, visual merchandisers, product managers and entrepreneurs in the broad areas of precious and costume jewellery, leather goods, gift-ware, tableware, watches, footwear, handicrafts and lifestyle products.

TEXTILE DESIGN

Involves study of spinning, weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing and finishing techniques of fabrics, besides those of design concepts, knowledge of color, pattern and texture. To pursue a wide range of careers  in textile mills and export houses, with fashion designers, design studios, mills buying houses, handloom cooperatives and buying agencies as design or fabric managers, or work independently as designers or entrepreneurs.

KNITWEAR DESIGN

To pursue a career as knitwear designers, stylists, entrepreneurs, design consultant, product developers, production managers, merchandisers, retail planners, business developers, forecasters, fashion writers, academicians.

FASHION COMMUNICATION

Can refer to a number of artistic and professional disciplines which focus on visual communication and presentation. Communication designers specialize in communication skills pertinent to the fashion and lifestyle industry. Four exit level profiles exist in graphic design, visual merchandising & retail space design, styling & photography, and fashion journalism.

ANIMATION

Can be defined as the art of breathing life to a character. A blend of entertainment industry and technology, it is concerned with design, drawing, layout and production of geographically rich and attractive multimedia clips. Animators are the talented artists who create characters for a variety of projects like movies, television, advertisements, etc.

TOY & INTERACTIVE GAME DESIGN

Toy designers are industrial designers who create a concept for and/or produce children’s toys and games. Most toy designers have a background in graphic design, industrial design or cartooning. Interactive game designers aim to create an original game that will stimulate curiosity and excitement in the target market.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Combines fine art, science, business and marketing to design and develop everyday products. Often electronics or machinery.  Industrial designers are responsible for the appearance, function, quality and safety of various manufactured goods.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Is the arrangement of living space, i.e, organizing, managing and planning  of the interiors of rooms at homes, offices, retail spaces, showrooms, hotels, airports, exhibition hall, conference centers, theaters, TV and film studios, etc. interior design includes designing the interiors as well as the exteriors of the space.

APPAREL PRODUCTION

To pursue a career in production, quality assurance, garment technologists, industrial engineering, product development, sourcing, project analysis, production planning, HR, system analysis, software application and merchandising (retail and export).

MASTER OF DESIGN

To hold key positions in large fashion or corporate houses, accessories, craft, textiles, forecasting, special needs, publications, media, lifestyle products, new product development, graphics, etc.
The designers would contribute in research and development in govt. and private agencies.

FASHION MANAGEMENT

A platform is offered to those willing to pursue careers in international marketing, fashion merchandising, brand management, retail buying and global sourcing, product development, retail management, visual merchandising, export merchandising, management consulting, fashion education, retail technology, supply chain, customer relationship, advertising, etc.
